School – based suicide prevention strategies

Aikaterini Samiotou, MSc The most common and widespread programs in a school base, are the psychoeducational programs (Shaffer & Gould 2000). Among their aims is to increase knowledge about the problem of suicide, educate on the identification of pupils who show “warning signs” and their referral to the appropriate services and encourage the suicidal students to ask for help themselves (Shaffer et al. 1991). Their functioning is both direct and indirect by educating the teachers and the other students to identify the pupils who are at risk (Shaffer & Gould 2000). Informing the participants of this program about the increase in subsequent suicide risk for the siblings and friends after a suicidal death as well as the different factors that can influence the suicide risk should be a part of the educational schedule. By demonstrating the familial, psychiatric and environmental vulnerability that these exposed groups present, the teachers and students can have an insight in the co

The impact of the loss of a loved one as a sibling

Aikaterini Samiotou, MSc The loss of a family member has been considered as one of the most stressful experiences (Holmes & Rahe 1967 cited by Clark & Goldney 2000). In a study that tested the adolescents’ perceptions and experiences around death and grief, the loss of a loved one was considered the most distasteful aspect of death (Morin & Welsh 1996). The term bereavement refers to “all the physiological, psychological, behavioural and social response patterns displayed by an individual following the loss of a significant person or thing” (Dunne et al. 1987, cited by Cvinar 2005). Bereavement is associated with increased rates of mood disorders in children and adolescents (Weller et al. 1991). One of the few studies that aimed to describe the characteristics of the children and adolescents after the suicide of their sibling presented them as being in a high risk for psychiatric symptomatology and social maladjustment (Pfeffer et al. 1997). According to the same study t

THE IMPACT OF ADOLESCENT SUICIDE ON SIBLINGS AND FRIENDS

Aikaterini Samiotou, MSc The history of completed suicide coexists with the history of the human being. “Completed suicide occurs when a lethal method and clear intention to die coincide; or what was assumed to be a non-lethal method does in fact kill the individual; or when anticipated rescue fails”(Bagley & Ramsay 1997). International studies, in an attempt to understand the suicide, have been interested in the appearance of suicidal behavior among different nations and countries. The questions more often asked are whether there are similarities and differences in the patterns of suicide, in the age and sex and how this information can lead to a better insight of suicidal behavior and of the factors that can play a predisposing, precipitating, maintaining and protective role. Indeed the results provided present differences in the characteristics and the methods of suicide as well as in the ages and the sex among the different countries (Shaffer & Gutstein 2004).
